After establishing themselves in the rapid grocery space, Asda wanted a different kind of offer that delivered what their customers really wanted; a full range of groceries, delivered in as little as 60 minutes. Express delivery convenience, but without the typical compromises on choice – a unique new offer in the superfast grocery space.
Asda collaborated with Gophr to tap into their extensive ship from store experience, ‘enterprise grade’ delivery tech platform and large network of couriers, allowing them to access stores that previously may not have been considered for Express Delivery. Gophr now powers Asda Express Delivery from 165+ stores across the UK as a provider in the 250 stores where this option is available to Asda customers.
Collaborating with a delivery partner with a large network of couriers
Asda supermarkets offer a large selection of products which give shoppers great value. Asda’s 600 stores across the UK are visited by more than 15.5 million customers each week, looking to complete a variety of missions from top up shops through to a full, regular shop to create healthy family meals. As one of the UK’s big four grocers, Asda looks to offer a broad range of delivery options to help customers complete these missions online as well as in store. In order to be able to serve customers quickly and conveniently, Asda needed a partner with a large network of couriers to help service its Express Delivery stores.
Rolling out the ship-from-store pilot with Gophr
In late 2021, Asda trialled a partnership with Gophr across 7 stores in London and Bristol, giving customers access to their entire 30,000 sku grocery range for rapid, same day delivery.
After proving the concept, the ship-from-store pilot was quickly rolled out to 115+ more stores across the UK with Gophr, and another 50+ in July 2022 after a successful start to the year.
“Gophr has made it easy for us to extend our Express Delivery service to more stores in new locations, ensuring that our customers are able to track their delivery in real-time. We started on this journey in 2021 and now have a partnership with Gophr in more than 165 Asda stores. As we look to reach even more customers, we hope that Gophr will continue to assist us in delivering a highly convenient service.” James Lyon, Last Mile Execution Project Manager, Asda
Express Delivery: the quicker way for shoppers to get their regular shop
Customers can select the Express Delivery option at checkout if living within a three-mile radius of an eligible store. Thanks to a custom API integration, a Gophr courier is quickly on their way to the store to collect the order, and the customer is able to track the progress of their delivery from store to doorstep in real-time. The option to contact the courier directly is also available if needed.
With no minimum basket size or spend, customers can purchase as much or as little as they need. This makes the service ideal for everything from speedy delivery on grocery essentials through to forgotten items such as anniversary cards or birthday cakes – all delivered quickly to save time or save the day.
Continuing the roll-out of the Express Delivery service
The ‘first of its kind’ service enables Asda to provide more choice to their customers, meeting the demand for more convenient delivery options.
The Asda x Gophr partnership now delivers thousands of online orders per week, and the service has won the ‘Ecommerce Initiative of the Year’ Award at the Gold Grocer Awards in June 2022. As Asda expands its Express Delivery offer to more stores before the end of the year, our couriers will be scaling with them.
